14th Annual Bushwick Film Festival Offers Free Live Screening and Short Film Blocks With Funny, Haunted, and Socially Conscious Themes Saturday 10/23 at Regal Cinemas Brooklyn
Themes Include ‘Campy Comedies’, ‘Let’s Talk About Sex Work’, ‘Art as Resilience’, and more
Brooklyn, NY (October 18, 2021) - The Bushwick Film Festival (BFF), one of Brooklyn’s most exciting cultural attractions, is excited to announce a full day of live screenings on Saturday October 23, 2021 through a partnership with Regal Cinemas. In addition, through the gratuitous support from City Artist Corps the screening of the feature film Rehab Cabin is free for everyone!
The festival has curated a mix of feature and short film blocks with fun, provocative, and socially conscious themes. The “Let's Talk about Sex Work” short film block features Vincen't Martell's Finesse and other films that highlight sex workers and discuss laws surrounding sexwork. “Art as Resistance'' showcases unique and resilient short documentaries, including “Art21: John Akomfrah'', that explore the inspiring ways in which change-makers have overcome societal and personal traumas through art. “Family Lies” features Richard Kind and Jessica Hecht, and “Defining Stages” features Hiam Abbass and Lynn Cohenwill. The free public screening supported by City Artist Corps is the feature film Rehab Cabin, a comedy directed by Kate Beacom & Louis Legge about two best friends who kidnap a washed-up celebrity in the hopes of rejuvenating her career. The nightcap of the evening, BFF’s last screening is “Campy Comedies” with dark, witty, awkward, and maybe a little sexy, stories that explore both the haunted and charming parts of everyday life.
“Having Regal as a partner gave BFF the opportunity to bring the best part of the festival back to life. The shared experience of watching films together is one of the most exciting parts of a festival.” says festival founder Kweighbaye Kotee. While Bushwick Film Festival isn’t able to screen all of the selected films live this year, the hybrid model of in-person and virtual events offers audiences different viewing possibilities to suit their needs. BFF is planning for a full return to live screenings next year.
In addition to screenings, the festival will also be hosting special events including its Opening Night Reception at Lot 45 in Bushwick on October 20th, a full day of industry networking at Circa Brewing Co. in downtown Brooklyn on October 23rd, and a virtual Movie Industry Conference on October 24th. Conference panelists include Emmy nominated Producer of HBO’s The Tale Mynette Louie, Showrunner of Netflix’s You Sera Gamble, SVP of Development and Production of Endeavor Cristina Garza, Editor of HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage Yael Hersonski, Rahul Roy from Magnolia’s Theatrical Distribution, Director of MPAC’s Hollywood Bureau Sue Obeidi, Cobra Kai’s Rose Bianco, NALIP’s Executive Director Ben Lopez, Founder of Fourth Agreement Entertainment Dana Kuznetzkoff, Founder of The Future of Film is Female Caryn Coleman, AICP’s Tabitha Mason-Elliott, ReFrame’s Director Andria Wilson Mirza, and more.

The festival will continue streaming all films on its platform watch.bushwickfilmfestival.com with daily filmmaker Q&A’s, and its awards ceremony will be available to watch on Facebook Live.
“Every year our program is dynamic, but what makes this year so special is the renewed enthusiasm and appreciation for personal interactions,” says Founder and CEO Kweighbaye Kotee. “This makes the ability to experience the arts together again so much more exciting. Our hybrid model still has its limitations, but gives us hope for the future. The stories we share always offer us the ability to see ourselves in ways we hadn’t imagined before, and we look forward to the incredible lineup this year.”
Approximately ten filmmakers will walk away with awards in categories such as Best Feature (Narrative & Documentary), Best Short (Narrative & Documentary), and Best Series, joining the ranks of incredible BFF alumni such as Marcus Reinaldo Greene, Dawn Porter, Adepero Oduye, Stefon Bristol, Shaka King, Alexander Dinelaris, Bradford Young, Katori Hall, Kitty Green and many more. The 14th Bushwick Film Festival highlights include:
Women is Losers - In 1960s San Francisco, a once-promising catholic school girl, Celina Guerrera, sets out to rise above the oppression of poverty and invest in a future for herself that sets new precedents for the time. Starring Lorenza Izzo (in a star making turn), Simu Liu (star of the upcoming Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Liza Weil (Gilmore Girls, How To Get Away With Murder).
Hudson Falls - The secrets of a small upstate town that revolve around an eccentric scientist (William Sadler) begin to unravel when a private eye from the city (Richard Kind) takes on a seemingly mundane job in an effort to rekindle a relationship with his ex-wife (Jessica Hecht).
Emma Without Edmond - Emma (Lynn Cohen) is an embittered, solitary widow. When she discovers old polaroids of her husband at a younger age in bed with another woman, she interrogates his urn and, in a fit of rage, knocks it off the mantle. She vacuums up the ashes and then uses the vacuum cleaner as a proxy for her husband as she embarks on a mission to conjure his spirit so they can have one last fight.
Rehab Cabin - Best friends Chloe and Domenic are quickly growing apart. At Chloe’s insistence, for their last hurrah, they kidnap their favorite celebrity, washed-up former child star Amanda Campbell. Driving a stolen limo, they take Amanda to a secluded cabin where they improvise a rehabilitation program designed to rejuvenate her career.
Cracked - It's the end of the summer of 1985 in Queens, New York City. Toya, a feisty young girl, falls in love for the first time. After a series of disturbing events, Toya's affection for Poochy compels her to face her traumatic past.
Bangla Surf Girls - Shobe, Aisha and Suma break away from the drudgery of their lives by joining a surf club in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The girls fight family pressure and social judgement for a few hours on the waves each day and gain confidence as their natural skill and prowess gains attention and praise. The joy and freedom of the waves are a stark change from the abuse and hardship they face at home. Soon they are poised to make history as Bangladesh’s first women surfers. However, the fate of the club itself hangs on the leadership of the coach who has his own challenges. The odds are stacked against them but the girls refuse to give up. Balancing the freedom of the waves with the restrictive realities of their circumstances, we experience the thrill and struggle of coming-of-age in a developing country.
Have a Nice Life - After hitting dead ends in life, Jyothi, an Indian housewife, and Sophie, a stoner musician, find themselves on the run from the law, together on a wild, surreal American road trip from Durham, North Carolina to Montreal, Canada.
The Knot (Uljhan) - Shirish and Geeta, an upper middle class couple in Lucknow, run over a rickshaw driver with their car and get caught up with dramatically opposing reactions to the tragedy. Shirish attempts to move on, harnessing the invisible protections afforded to him by class structure, and hiding behind the visible walls and locked gates of his home. In parallel, Geeta’s guilt drives her to surreptitiously employ Manoj, the victim’s younger brother, intertwining two lives otherwise separated by class and power. The small collision quickly turns into a dramatic suspense, spurred by greed, betrayal, guilt, and the nocuous effects of grave inequality threaten to unwind the very fabric of each of their lives.
The Last Out - Three young Cuban baseball players leave their families and risk exile to train in Central America and chase their dreams of playing in the Major Leagues. Filmed over more than four years, The Last Out tells the very human story of people caught between countries who want nothing more than to make a better life for their families.
Boy From The Blaze - Aleixo Paz A.K.A “Boy from the Blaze” is the survivor of a tragic accident that destroyed his life and that of his family. About to turn 18, without a job or an education, he spends his days in the darkness of his room. Consumed by pain and anger, his only hope is writing songs for an imaginary crowd. Inspired by a friend and encouraged by his mother, he will find the strength to go on stage and overcome his fears.
FINESSE - An unexpected psychedelic bonding experience leads three roommates to question their flailing intimate relationships and risk it all. We follow Martell (Vincent Martell), Kizer (Shea Couleé), and Daryn (Jeez Loueez), as they struggle to survive capitalism and find intimacy in Chicago. Daryn explores her sexual fantasies and gets heavy-handed with a submissive. Kizer lip-syncs for a drag competition show. Martell thinks he hit the jackpot with a new client.
Americanized - Growing up in Oakland’s hip-hop culture, Eng struggles with her Chinese American identity. To her high school basketball team, she’s just that girl who sits on the bench; but to the Asian kids she’s "Americanized." As her sophomore year of high school comes to an end, Eng tries to find a sense of belonging within the two worlds that don't accept her.

HELLO, CLARICE l Themed Shorts Block, 88 min
Have you ever looked closely at the movie poster for The Silence of the Lambs? No, that’s not a butterfly — that’s a Death's-Head Hawkmoth! …
Wait, let’s start at the beginning: one of the all-time great character and acting transformations belong to Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) in the aforementioned film. Released in 1991, The Silence of the Lambs still stands as a touchstone for actors, featuring an iconic expression of the power of self-transformation.
Although the different stages of transformation for a Death’s-Head Hawkmoth are fascinating within the context of that film, what we’re more interested in here are the women who appear front and center in these magnificent shorts. Each one of them on their own journey, pursuing growth and doing it on their own terms.

STORM THE GATES | Themed Shorts Block, 110 Min

Wrestle the male directors out of the chairs, then put the chair back up and sit in it!”
The courageous filmmakers in this block all examine power — who has it, who gets to wield it — and leave us asking what change can be achieved through self-determination. This is the must-see block of 2020.

THE SUPER 8 FEELING (WEB SERIES / NEW MEDIA) l Themed Web Series / New Media Block, 128 min
In the words of Nicolas Cage, “The Super 8 feeling is what my brother and I used to feel when we made movies in the backyard with the camera our dad bought us when we were kids. I didn’t care about awards or money… It was simply because we loved making the movie and telling a story.”
The home movie has come a long way since portable video cameras became commonplace in the 80s and 90s. Today, artists are getting together with their friends and creating diverse multi-layered work. In this series, we spotlight profiles of nurses who otherwise may not have gotten one, gentrification comedies, and an artist by the name of Gazoo who defies almost all descriptions. Though disguised as a new medium, the web series has its roots in the Super 8 feeling and sits here as an intersection between the ancient, the old, and the new.

13th Annual Bushwick Film Festival Launches First Virtual Festival from October 21-25
Presenting 5 Days of Virtual Screenings, Events and Panels to Audiences around the world!
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Sept 3, 2020 (Newswire.com) - The Bushwick Film Festival (BFF), one of Brooklyn’s most exciting cultural attractions, will present its 13th edition virtually from October 21–25, 2020.
Transformation is the theme for this year and the festival has chosen a symbol that fully embodies the word: a butterfly. “Our butterfly glows and emerges from the electricity surrounding it, symbolizing profound transformation and honoring the energy it has to manifest to get there.” says festival director Kweighbaye Kotee. “We have had to endure many challenges this year: COVID-19, loss of black lives at the hands of police, the passing of beloved heroes, climate change wildfires, devastation in Beirut. It feels like the lines between our own reality and a movie have become blurry and the comfort we enjoyed surrendering when we watch films on-screen is now a reminder of the loss of control in our own lives. Nevertheless, while we have yet to make it to the end of this real-life movie, we have already begun to emerge with electricity as better versions of ourselves as a global community. The Black Lives Matter movement going global and healthcare workers risking their lives to save us are just two examples. So this year, we not only celebrate our filmmakers for always reminding us of our courage and perseverance through their characters, but we also celebrate each other and how much we have transformed as a global community.
The festival has transformed by creating new and exciting experiences that for the first time ever will be available to audiences everywhere. Films will now be available to watch on a secure streaming platform sponsored by Spectrum. Panels and conversations will be watched on an online events platform that connects people around the globe. Live music and other content will be programmed and available to Livestream. There will be special contests and games to engage audiences in a fun way. Finally, the most anticipated events, opening night and its awards ceremony, will be produced in partnership with Chemistry Creative and be broadcasted online and on partner platforms.
Since its inception, the festival has showcased films by the best and most diverse emerging filmmakers in Brooklyn and worldwide, while simultaneously celebrating films directed by and starring women. In 2019, approximately 50% of films shown at BFF were directed by a female or person of color. This year, over 100 films will be included in the programming. Approximately ten filmmakers will walk away with awards in categories such as Best Feature (Narrative Doc), Best Short (Doc & Narrative), and Best Web Series, joining the ranks of incredible BFF alumni such as Miles Orion Feldsott, Kitty Green, Diarra Kilpatrick, Dawn Porter, Adepero Oduye, Stefon Bristol, Shaka King, Alexander Dinelaris, Bradford Young, and many more.
Led by the theme of transformation, the vision for the 13th Annual #BushwickFilmFest is to use the current landscape as an opportunity to unite more people than BFF has ever before through film — films that remind us we are the main characters of our own stories and we decide where we go from here. The symbolic butterfly represents this new year for us and for film in more than one way: periods of darkness can lead to brighter outcomes, and perseverance is necessary on the long journey there.
Select passes to the 13th Annual Bushwick Film Festival are now available, and individual tickets will go on sale on September 15. For notifications about ticket sales and/or to receive 2020 festival updates, please visit https://www.bushwickfilmfestival.com/ticketsandpasses.

Like most small businesses, particularly event-based organizations like film festivals who bring large audiences together, the festival wanted to join in the efforts to create positive ways for people to connect from the safety of their homes. Like all film lovers, we know that stories have always had the power to bring people closer together, help us understand more about ourselves and the people around us, and now more important than ever, entertain us, inspire us and make us laugh out loud.
Over the last 12 years, the festival has screened the works of over 500 directors who have gone on to achieve incredible success in the industry. Together, we are building a program for our audiences that will create a one-of-kind opportunity to enter an intimate exchange with these fantastic artists and their works and some much-needed diversion in these trying times.
“One of the things I love most about being BFF’s founder is seeing the journey of our filmmakers. When they are at Bushwick they come as emerging storytellers, many with first or second features, and I get to see them move on to platforms like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or get theatrical distribution deals. That makes me and everyone at the festival feel like we’ve contributed to their success. The films and shows that we’ll be watching together on Netflix are a testament to the diversity of programming that we have always valued since our first edition in 2007.” Says Festival Founder, Kweighbaye Kotee.
The 13th Annual Bushwick Film Festival is still set to run in October 2020 and submissions are currently open. The festival will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and have conversations with its partners and sponsors while it determines exact dates.
